Gundu Malli Poo means Big Round Jasmine Flower in English, and that is what we named our pig.
Tarzan-like manoeuvers at night
One night, we received a rescue call about a pig hit by a vehicle. The animal had moved himself across the road to an old abandoned marble site. When we got there, we found the injured pig dragging himself on forelegs – the hind legs were not working at all.
It was dark, too late in the day to call for more help, and considering the size of the pig, nothing much could be done then except injecting painkillers so that he could spend the night more peacefully.
The pain and injury had made the pig had aggressive, and even in to give him the painkillers, we had to climb a tree and perform some Tarzan-like manoeuvres!
A loveable flower
Next day with a team of 4-5 people from Bark India the pig was rescued and taken to the hospital. There, an X-Ray showed a dislocated hip and broken pelvis. The pig was treated and stayed in Bark India for a year.
Regaining the use of his hind legs and no longer injured, his true spirit emerged and he became extremely friendly with all the humans and dogs there. It is then he was given the name of Gundu Malli Poo for his lovable and friendly nature.
Best friends forever
One of Gundu Malli Poo’s best friends was an old dog, rescued during Covid, whose front legs were not working. They used to sit hip to hip as if protecting each other. Once the old dog died, Gundu Malli Poo became good friends with Anto, a dog with nervous system disorder and coordination issue.
Here they are sitting together, just like Timon and Pumba, from The Lion King.
When the time came to relocate Gundu Malli Poo to Sharanya Sanctuary, he refused to get into the van. It was only when Anto was also brought into the Van that he agreed to come in. It took a team of 6-8 people to accomplish this task!
A king in his empire
Here he finally found his permanent home, amidst trees and with a large pond to splash around in… a king in his empire surrounded by his best friends the dogs.
