Gauri – Baby Monkey Business

Gauri was rescued when information came from the forest department in Neyvali about a monkey stuck on a barbed wire. On reaching the location it was found that the monkey had died but she had a small 2 day old infant suckling on her breast. We volunteered to pick up the animal as the little one required intensive care and nurturing at that nascent stage in the absence of her mother and with the trauma of losing her mother. Slowly, very slowly, with infinite patience, care and an abundance of love she started growing up and adapting to her new surroundings.

However we knew that being a wild animal requiring other monkeys for social interaction, she had to be released back to a suitable environment at some time. Our job was just in the initial few months.

We heard about a facility in Bannerghatta, Bangalore which was just such set up, specializing in adapting and releasing animals like monkeys, snakes back into the wild. Once we were satisfied with the facility, Gauri was taken to Bangalore and handed over to them to have a full and complete life with those of her kind.  It was not an easy thing to do as in those few months itself she had made a special place in our hearts, but it had to be done for her good.
